What is Inavolisib?
Inavolisib is a targeted therapy medication used in the treatment of certain types of cancer. It works by inhibiting the PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase) pathway, which is often overactive in cancer cells. This action helps to slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells.
How is Inavolisib Administered?
- Inavolisib is taken orally in the form of a tablet or capsule.
- The usual dose is 9mg once daily, but your specific dose will be determined by your healthcare provider based on your condition and overall treatment plan.
- Take the medication at the same time each day with a full glass of water.
- It can be taken with or without food, depending on your doctor’s instructions.
- Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets.
Possible Side Effects
Inavolisib can cause side effects. Common ones include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Decreased appetite
- Skin rash
Less common but serious side effects:
- Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels)
- Liver toxicity (elevated liver enzymes)
- Lung inflammation (pneumonitis)
- Severe infections
If you experience severe or unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Precautions Before Starting Inavolisib
- Inform your doctor if you have a history of:
- Diabetes or blood sugar problems
- Liver or kidney issues
- Any other significant medical conditions
- Discuss all medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking, especially those that affect blood sugar or the liver.
- Use effective contraception during treatment and for a period afterward, as Inavolisib can harm an unborn baby.
- Avoid live vaccines during treatment.
Managing Side Effects
- Nausea and vomiting: Anti-nausea medications may be prescribed. Eat small, bland meals as needed.
- High blood sugar: Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly if you have diabetes or are at risk. Inform your doctor of significant changes.
- Skin rash: Use gentle skincare products and inform your doctor if the rash worsens.
- Diarrhea: Stay hydrated and consult your doctor for anti-diarrheal medications if needed.
When to Contact Your Physician
- Immediately:
- If you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain.
- If you notice signs of infection, such as fever or chills.
- If you have severe abdominal pain or persistent diarrhea.
- As soon as possible:
- If you experience a significant rash or skin reaction.
- If you notice unusual fatigue or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice).
- If you experience elevated blood sugar symptoms, such as increased thirst or frequent urination.
Storage and Handling
- Store Inavolisib at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
- Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
